Welcome back to the Hallestam Crochet Atelier, where we explore the foundations of crochet with clarity, elegance and intention. In the previous lesson, you learned how to crochet a Magic Ring, creating the perfect polished beginning for any circular project.

Today, we shift our focus to one of the most essential skills in all of crochet — the single crochet stitch.

Mastering the single crochet (sc) is like learning the alphabet of crochet. Once you understand it fully, the rest of the craft opens up with ease, confidence and beautiful precision.

✨ Why the Single Crochet Matters

The single crochet is the foundation for countless techniques and projects. It creates a dense, structured fabric that is perfect for:

  • amigurumi

  • bag making

  • pouches and accessories

  • edging

  • decorative borders

  • swatches and foundational practice

In many Hallestam Design pieces, the single crochet adds the clean structure and refined feel that gives each item its signature elegance.

How to Crochet Single Crochet — Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s walk through the single crochet stitch in a clear and intentional way. Whether you're new to crochet or refining your technique, these steps will help you build a strong foundation.

✨ Step-by-Step Single Crochet (sc)

1. Insert your hook

Insert the hook into the stitch indicated — usually under both loops unless a pattern says otherwise.

2. Yarn over

Bring the yarn over the hook from back to front.

3. Pull up a loop

Draw the yarn through the stitch. You now have two loops on your hook.

✨ Symbol & Abbreviation

  • US abbreviation: sc

  • Symbol (in diagrams): “X” or “+” depending on chart style

  • Skill level: beginner-friendly, foundational

✨ Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

“My edges look uneven.”

→ Count your stitches at the end of each row.→ Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every row if needed.

“My stitches are different heights.”

→ Focus on consistent yarn tension.→ Practice slowing your movements until your hands find a natural rhythm.

“My fabric curls.”

→ Ensure you are using the right hook size for your yarn.→ Tight tension often causes curling — loosen your grip slightly.

Practice How to Crochet Single Crochet

This structured exercise helps you build muscle memory and confidence.

Practice Exercise: The Perfect Practice Square

  1. Chain 12

  2. Turn, single crochet in the second chain from hook

  3. Work 10 single crochets to the end of the row

  4. Chain 1, turn

  5. Repeat 10 single crochets for 10–12 rows

  6. Bind off and weave in ends

Your square should look even, flat and neatly edged — a perfect first building block in your crochet journey.

✨ Tips for Beautiful, Even Single Crochet

✔ Keep your wrist relaxed — tension comes from your fingers, not your whole hand

✔ Maintain a smooth, gentle yarn flow

✔ Insert your hook cleanly without twisting

✔ Block your final swatch lightly with steam to enhance shape

These small details create the difference between “good enough” and “beautifully crafted”.
